Introduction

The purpose of this book is to provide an introductory look at no limit hold'em strategy. Our aim is to be both thorough and correct while at the same time remaining accessible to a beginning poker player. It is assumed that the reader has played no limit hold'em before and has an understanding of the basic procedures of the game.

The decisions you make before the flop are foundational for play after the flop. Employing the wrong preflop strategy will set you up for disaster and make your life needlessly difficult. Conversely, if you apply the right strategy, then many of your post-flop decisions will be easy and automatic. Consider the following hand. We are playing 1/2 NLHE at a casino. My Poker Story

I've always loved poker. As a child, I excelled at games, and was very interested in them. Bridge, chess, monopoly. I even developed a unique strategy for Go-Fish, which is to just ask for the same card over and over again, so that you reveal nothing about your hand (it's not really that effective). So poker was a natural fit for me. I came of age during the poker boom. WPT and the WSOP were on TV and poker was making it's way into Canadian casinos. I still remember those first, heady steps into the wild frontier that is online poker. At first I was a complete degenerate. I'd jump into games, way over my head and out of my bankroll. Usually I'd go bust. Every once in a while I'd spin up a roll and then go broke.
